What to Ask When Hiring a Provider for Lawn Mowing Services

Hiring a provider for lawn mowing services is just like hiring for any position. You should do a preliminary phone interview or reach out to the company online. If they answer your preliminary questions satisfactorily, then you need to have them come out and see your lawn. Then you can ask questions specific to your landscape. A good lawn mowing company will expect to answer your questions when you contact them. A bad lawn mowing company will get defensive, evade questions, and not be able to answer some questions. While there are many questions you could ask, here are some you should be sure to ask.

Questions About the Company

Hiring an established company with a good reputation is a safe bet when looking for a lawn service provider. Ans asking the right questions can save you a lot of hassle in the long run. When hiring a provider for lawn mowing services, we recommend you ask the following questions to give you the information you need to know.

How long have you been in business?

Make sure this company has been in business for a while. You want to know they will not disappear on you, are willing to come back if there are any problems, and aren’t there to take your money first without completing the job.

What is your team’s level of tenure?

You want to make sure the team that is working on your lawn knows what they are doing. Otherwise, they can damage or kill your lawn. It is helpful if they are licensed and attend regular advanced training, so ask for credentials, too.

Do you have testimonials or reviews from your clients I can see?

A good, competent company will have testimonials from satisfied clients. They should also have reviews on popular sites like Google or Facebook. If they do not have these things, that is a red flag.

What will happen when I have a question or problem?

Is there a receptionist who answers the phones during the day? Or do you get voice mail? How frequently do they check their messages and call you back? You need to know that you can get hold of someone if there is a problem such as property damage or you are not happy with their work.

What are your payment plans?

Most established lawn care companies will have different plans at different service levels. They should be able to tell you what is included and what costs extra. They should also be able to tell you if there are things they will not do.

Is paying my bill convenient?

Can you go to a client portal to pay my bill, or do I have to pay in cash? Can I prepay for a time period using my credit card or do I have to pay month to month? Paying should be easy. If paying your bill is unnecessarily difficult, you can be sure they will be difficult with other things, too.

Do they have a contract?

If they have a contract, ask to read it. Do they have a minimum time limit you have to commit to? What happens if you are not satisfied with their work? Do you have to continue paying for your lawn care if you want to fire them?

How the Company Does What They Do

Each company does things a little differently. When do they fertilize, do spring clean-up, and other routine chores? Here are some questions to ask about those things.

What do you think is important to do to maintain a healthy lawn?

Different people think different processes are necessary to maintain a lawn. Ask them what they think is important. This needs to align with your ideas of what is necessary. Otherwise, you will never be happy with what they do.

What makes your company different from all the others?

Anybody can mow grass – doing it well is another thing. The person you are talking to should be able to tell you why they are the best. They should also tell you any specialties they have. If they cannot tell you this it is another red flag.

Are your technicians licensed to apply pesticides and lawn treatments?

If they are not licensed, don’t use them. Different states have different requirements to apply pesticides and herbicides, so make sure they follow the rules in your state.

How can you improve my yard?

Describe your ideal lawn and ask them to outline a process to take your present lawn there. They should be able to talk about the steps necessary, the order they should be applied, and the cost of doing so. If they cannot answer your question on the spot, they should offer to send you a plan in a reasonable amount of time, say 72 hours.
